Family and Holidays

Since most of our family lives at least three hours away and we are not able to visit with them as much as we would like, my husband and I were concerned about our son knowing his family members when he does see them. So, we purchased (rather inexpensively) plastic picture holders with magnets on the back for the refrigerator. We placed in them pictures of our immediate family. So, when we see family, not only is Matthias not frightened, he recognizes everyone and knows their names as well. (We also change the pictures temporarily before a trip if we are going to see other family members or friends.)

Long ago, tired of frantic shopping as the holidays loomed, I began buying gifts throughout the year. I have a spreadsheet with family and friends in one column and gift ideas/gift purchased in the next column. This allows me to keep track of what’s on the “gift shelf” and I can see what we gave last year so we don't repeat ourselves! To myriad cousins we do repeat ourselves, however, with something along the lines of a nicely wrapped bottle of wine coupled with a fancy snack. If we're empty-handed for a few folks as November draws near, I jot down ideas onto the list to review with my husband. Sometimes, my ideas give him better ideas! If we are stumped, we take a quick trip to an enjoyable shopping plaza and browse stress free. I start wrapping gifts in early December, a few each evening while I enjoy holiday music (and the cats enjoy the ribbons). Since I started this, I find that I have the time and mindframe to enjoy the true meaning of the holidays.
